"Sawatdee Kha"

Saying hello in Thailand

  • Put your hands together

  • Slight bow, still maintain eye contact.

  • Say "Sawatdee..." and add "Kha" if female

  • or "Khrap" if male at the end of Sawatdee.

Thai is a tonal language that has five tones: 1)monotone 2)low 3)falling 4)high, and 5)rising. This is typically hard for a native English speaker to pickup because there are no tones in the English language.

Here are a couple of phrases to learn if you ever go to Thailand

Hello (male) .......... Sawatdee Khrap
Hello (female) .......... Sawatdee Kha
How are you? .......... Sabai dee reu plaew
Fine Thanks! .......... Sabai dee!
Thank you .......... Kop Khun
Never mind ..........Mai pen rai
